Values of Teacher College Staffs in the Northeast, Thailand.

    The aim of this study is to investigate the attitudes and values of the teaching staffs in the teacher colleges of the Northeast. This research was designed to:-
1. study the values of the teaching staffs in the teacher colleges of the Northeast in relation to the Thai values systems.
2. study the Terminal and Instrumental values by comparing the following variables; sex, age, education, marital status, academic fields, and bureaucratic period of the teaching staffs.
3. study the differences of the living and professional attitudes between sexes as well as education levels.
4. compare between groups of different levels of education on the opinion towards Thai education.

Research Procedure
1. Samples were drawn from thirteen teacher colleges of the Northeast, consisting of 250 male and 150 female teaching staffs.
2. Tools used in this study were value survey instrument and questionnaire.
3. Median test, Spearman’s rank correlation coefficients, and Chi-square were used to analyze the data.

Research Finding
1. On the Terminal values, majority of the teaching staffs gave more importance to Personal values than Social focus values. These Personal values were “Success in life”, “Family happiness, security”, “Self-esteem”, “Happiness, no conflict”, and “Education”. On the contrary, Nation security is more important to the Thais as a whole. Success in life value was highly related to Competent, capable value, this implied that teaching staffs have talent achievement motivation.

On the Instrumental values, the teaching staffs gave more importance to Interpersonal moral values than Competence values. These values were “ Responsible”, “Honest”, “Self-reliant independent”, “Grateful, obligated”, “Competent, capable”, and “Responsive to opportunities” Competence values were more important to the teaching staffs than the Thai people and Competent, capable value was highly related to Equality value.
2. The Terminal and Instrumental values did not greatly differ among the teaching staffs, since they were from the same profession. Of all the variables, age was the most important factor that made the difference in term of Terminal values. Male teaching staffs emphasized more on Social relation values than the female counterpart. The staffs with bacherlor degree have greater Obedient, meek values than the others. The staffs with Ph. D degree emphasize on Broadminded value while merried staffs emphasized on family, security value. Responsible values was more important to the staffs from Social science section than the other sections.
3. Attitudes towards their living were in accordance with their values, that is, they treasured interpersonal relationship by maintaining friendliness. Living attitudes were in agreement with the Responsive to opportunities value. Attitudes towards achievement was also in agreement with Success in life value, except seriousness and concienteousness in which friendlness overruled. They expressed positively towards the effect of sin and merit.
4. The staffs positively showed attitudes towards teaching profession. However, these attitudes were not very strong since they hesitated when a better opportunity was proposed.
5. Among the staffs with difference level of education there was no different in the opinion towards Thai education. Most of them favoured various types of education system, however, they realized that unequality was the advantage.
6. Majority of the staffs believed that Thai education philosophy is classified as Progressivism and Reconstructionism. They also suggests that there should be an improvement of curriculum, teaching, educational equality and management of the system.
