   ABSTRACT

The purposes of this study were 1) to investigate the situation of the coordination between school and community relating to the application of local wisdom to the organization of teaching and learning and 2) to find out the factors contributing to the promotion or prevention of community participation in using local wisdom in the organization of teaching and learning. The study investigated schools in Educational Region 9. Multi – stage random sampling was employed to get sampling school and the target group was selected from such schools. There were one hundred and twenty one in the target group included administrators, teachers, community leaders and local wisdoms. Focus group discussion was employed in order to collect data. The findings were as followed:
1. On the situation of applying local wisdom in learning and teaching, it was found that teachers who were responsible for teaching courses such as life – experience group or basic occupation course or teacher who were in charges of classroom management implemented local wisdom in their classes. The scope of such local wisdom mainly included occupational area, art, culture and folk wisdom, and local wisdom relating to indigenous technology. The purposes of implemented such areas based on the rationale that students could earn extra – income, and conduct learning and teaching activities by depending upon community resources and local experts.
As for the strength and weaknesses of the cooperation, it was found that the relationship varied according to the close linkage between different communities. Furthermore, the participation in school administration of community leaders and representatives also contributed to the cooperation of school and community in organization of local wisdom in learning and teaching.
The types of cooperation included: 1) making decision in the selection of teaching theme, 2) planing for teaching 3) the local experts participated in teaching and 4) donating teaching materials and local items for school.
2. Factors contributing to promotion or prevention the community participation in the implementing local wisdom in learning and teaching included: good relationship between school and community, training assistance from outside institutes such as private organizations, supporting from school administrators, awareness of teachers who gained experience from training programmes or came back from further study and concerned feelings of local experts to their own children who studied in school.
