Abstract: The purposes of this research were: to survey general information; identify teaching strategies and resource material used in environmental education; investigate students' awareness of environmental problems; and explore suitable age levels for students to develop environmental responsibility in Thailand, Australia, and Japan. A checklist and seven-point rating scale questionnaires were used in this research. The rates of response were 92.00%, 77.50%, and 63.88% for the Thai, Australian, and Japanese secondary school teachers, respectively.
The results of this study revealed that there were similarities and differences among the teachers' opinions according to different cultures, traditions, philosophies, educational systems, and beliefs. Most of the Thai (39.62%) and Japanese (52.83%) teachers used lecture as the media for teaching environmental issues. As a result 58.70% (Thai) and 64.52% (Japanese) of them accepted that their teaching was not appropriate in fostering and developing environmental awareness. In contrast, most of the Australian teachers (91.30%) believed that their teaching was appropriate with 25.33% of them using the inquiry methods in teaching. It is concluded that environmental responsibility should be taught at the youngest age possible.
