Abstract
The purposes of this research were to study the retention of reading and writing ability of people who finished the literacy campaign project as well as retention among people who completed their compulsory edcation in Khon Kaen province. The study also investigated factors involved in the retention of reading and writing and weiting ability among these adults. One-hundred and thirty0two samples were drawn from groups of peo;pe who finished the literacy campaign project and people who completed their compulsory education.
Structured interviews were used and in-depth interviews were employed in order to obtain personal information and environmental information. A test of the Thai langusge from the Deportment of Nonformal Education was used to measure the retention of reading and writing abiliyt. F-test and Cross0tabulations were employed in order to find differences among people in different environments.
Theresults showed that there were 3.8 percent of the sample who did not retain what they had learned. Sex, age, number of literate family members, the availibility of resource centres in the village, and reading habits were related to the level of retention in reading and writing at statistically significant levels.
